Air Power Seminar – Space: The Next Battlefield?

Almost seven decades ago, the world’s radio operators were startled by a rhythmic, persistent "beep" emanating from the stars. It was the signal from Sputnik I, and it fundamentally changed the trajectory of human history. Since that moment, space has rapidly evolved from a silent realm of scientific exploration into an indispensable—and increasingly contested—operational domain.

The militarization of space is not a future concept; it is a historical reality. Operation Desert Storm in 1991 was dubbed the first "space war," demonstrating the unparalleled strategic edge provided by GPS and satellite communications. Our reliance on the orbital domain only deepened through complex operations like ISAF in Afghanistan, leading to a total paradigm shift in how we use—and defend—these assets.

Today, the barrier to entry has plummeted. In Ukraine, we have seen the revolutionary impact of commercial constellations like Starlink, which provided the essential backbone for command, control, and drone operations when traditional infrastructure failed.  Fully integrated into missile and drone "kill chains", defenders must rely on orbital early-warning and cyber-to-space capabilities to intercept and neutralize threats.

Space is no longer just a supporting element; it is a critical center of gravity. In this rapidly shifting landscape, where does Belgium stand?

Join us at the upcoming Air Power Seminar as we dive into the Belgian Defence Space Doctrine. The air students of the 140th Div AStC have deeply researched each segment for our current capabilities—where we are—and define a potential strategic trajectory—where we should be going.

The conference will host multiple SME's offering their external view on the subject.

Expect an engaging look at how the Belgian Defence is preparing to secure its interests and integrate space into future multi-domain operations.

Registration closes Apr 13th, 2026

Video conferencing might not be available as the venue has changed this year.

However, a recording (CDN or VPN only) will be  available on the Department Air Ops Share point: Air Power Seminar (mil.intra) after the end of the academic year

Note: the conference will be in English without simultaneous translation.
