In today’s geopolitical context, where the defence of the European Union is being threatened and the transatlantic relationship is in trouble, The Hague Summit in June 2025 will open the way to NATO 3.0: a stark departure from the Cold War alliance and the one that followed the fall of the Berlin Wall. With Russia continuing its war of aggression against Ukraine and Donald Trump’s second term as US president, a stronger engagement of the Europeans within the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation appears necessary – even imperative to some.

In a complicated international situation, Europeans must anticipate questions pertaining to the Organisation’s capacities, but also its governance. Which priority challenges are awaiting the Alliance? How can we establish a more balanced transatlantic relationship? Should Europe be able to defend itself autonomously? Is NATO moving towards a new leadership? And can there be a defence of Ukraine – and Europe – without the Atlantic Alliance?

To answer all these questions, we will have the pleasure of welcoming Mr Camille Grand, researcher at the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) and former NATO Assistant Secretary General, as well as Mr Sven Arnold, guest researcher at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik, SWP) in Berlin.

This conference will take place in French and in English on Thursday 22 May 2025 at 17:00 in the conference room at campus Renaissance (entrance: rue Hobbema 8/Hobbemastraat 8, 1000 Brussels). A simultaneous interpretation in English, French and Dutch will be provided in the conference room. It will not be possible to follow the conference online. However, subject to the consent of the speakers, a recording of their presentations will be made available afterwards on our website.

Registration by Thursday 15 May 2025 at the latest is compulsory.
